WHAT IS WELCHOL? 

Welchol (colesevelam) is a prescription medication taken adjunct with proper diet and exercise regime to help lower LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol in the blood in adults and children at least 10 years old. By doing so, it reduces the risk of heart disease and prevents strokes and heart attacks. It is also recommended to lower high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus.  

It belongs to a class of drugs called bile acid sequestrants which works by attaching to the bile acid and removing them from the body to lower “bad” cholesterol in the blood.

WELCHOL PRECAUTIONS 

Before taking Welchol, contact a healthcare professional if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. If you have a family history or a medical condition that includes one or more of the following, tell your healthcare professional. 

  • Pancreatitis 
  • High Triglyceride Levels
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Trouble Swallowing
  • Vitamin A, D, E, or K deficiency
  • Stomach/Intestinal Disorders 

Before taking this medication, inform your doctor if you had recent surgery on your stomach or intestines. 

Welchol is not recommended for patients with diabetic ketoacidosis, stomach or intestinal problems, and inflammation of the pancreas due to high triglycerides.  

This medication is not recommended for girls who have not started their menstrual period yet. 

This medication is not recommended for children younger than ten years old.  

Before taking Welchol, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. 

Before taking this medication, inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed and consult about the possible side effects to a nursing baby.

WELCHOL SIDE EFFECTS 

The common side effects of Welchol are constipation, nausea, upset stomach, heartburn, weakness, sore throat, runny nose, and muscle aches. Stop taking Colesevelam and report side effects to your healthcare provider and seek medical attention if you start experiencing: 

  • Persistent Nausea/Vomiting 
  • Blurred Vision
  • Dizziness

WELCHOL DOSAGE 

Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding the prescribed dose for your condition. Read the Welchol guide and prescription labels for the drug information and directions in taking this drug. If you don’t understand the directions, get assistance from a doctor or pharmacist. 

This medication comes in two dosage forms: the Welchol 625 mg tablet and the Welchol Oral Suspension 3.75 gram. 

If you have trouble swallowing the tablet, go for the oral suspension powder that must be mixed with 8 oz of water, fruit juice, or soft drink. The best time of the day to take Welchol is after a meal or during a snack.  

For the patients with hyperlipidemia, administer 1.875 g (3 tablets) orally, every 12 hours, or administer 3.75 g (6 tablets) orally, once daily. You can also administer 1.875 g or ½ packet of the oral suspension powder orally, every 12 hours, or administer 3.75 g or 1 packet of the oral suspension powder orally, once daily.  

For patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, administer 1.875 g (3 tablets) orally, every 12 hours, or administer 3.75 g (6 tablets) orally, once daily. You can also administer 1.875 g or ½ packet of the oral suspension powder orally, every 12 hours, or administer 3.75 g or 1 packet of the oral suspension powder orally, once daily.  

If you missed a dose, take Welchol as soon as you remember. However, if your next planned dose for your condition is approaching, skip the missed dose and take the following one. Don’t take a double dose of this medication to make up for the missed dosage.  

In the event of an overdose, or if you are suffering overdose symptoms like fainting or difficulty breathing, contact 911 and get medical help right away.
