What Is Myrbetriq (Mirabegron)?
Myrbetriq medication belongs to a class of medicines known as Beta-3 adrenergic agonists. It is used to treat overactive bladder (OAB) in adults with symptoms like urgency, frequency, and leakage. In addition, it is used to treat neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) in children three years old and older weighing 35 kg and more. Myrbetriq’s generic alternative is Mirabegron.
The detrusor muscle in the bladder usually relaxes to allow the bladder to fill with urine. When urinating, the detrusor muscle contracts to allow urine to be released.
With OAB, the detrusor muscle contracts most of the time, squeezing the bladder and decreasing the amount of urine it can hold. Therefore, even though your bladder is not yet full, it forces you to urinate frequently and urgently. Furthermore, it can also lead to accidental urination (incontinence), where you cannot make it to the bathroom in time.
When this oral medication is administered correctly and absorbed into the bloodstream, it works by attaching to a beta-3 receptor on the detrusor muscles.
This attachment causes the muscles to relax, allowing the bladder to store more urine. This relieves the symptoms of OAB by helping you reduce the number of times you urinate and prevent incontinence.

The Myrbetriq doses are as follows:
- The typical dose for treating adult patients with OAB is 25 mg orally once daily. After four to eight weeks, this intake can be increased, not exceeding the maximum daily dosage of 50 mg.
- Meanwhile, the recommended dose for the treatment of neurogenic detrusor overactivity for pediatric patients depends on their weight. The oral granules are given to smaller children to ease in swallowing and administration. For a child weighing 11 to 22 kg, the starting dose is 3 mL orally once daily. This can be increased to 6 mL once daily if needed. For a child weighing between 22 kg to 35 kg, the recommended daily dose is 4 mg once daily; this can be increased to 8 mL once daily. For children weighing more than 35 kg, the oral tablet is administered. The starting dose is 25 mg once daily. This dose can be increased to 50 mg once daily after 4–8 weeks.
