WHAT IS GLYXAMBI?  

Glyxambi (Empagliflozin/Linagliptin) is a prescription medication that helps with reducing and controlling blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. Glyxambi’s drug class is called antidiabetic combinations, as it is a combination of empagliflozin and linagliptin.  

Empagliflozin works by getting rid of the glucose in your bloodstream through the kidneys, while linagliptin works by making the pancreas release more insulin. 

This medication is not recommended for adults with type 1 diabetes.  

GLYXAMBI PRECAUTIONS 

Before taking Glyxambi, contact a healthcare professional if you are allergic to the ingredients of this medication or have any other allergies. Inform your healthcare provider further if you have a family history or medical condition of:

  • High Cholesterol
  • Kidney Disease
  • Liver Disease
  • Pancreatitis

Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires focus and alertness, as this medication causes you to experience blurry vision, dizziness, and drowsiness due to extremely high or low blood sugar. Avoid these activities until you are certain you can perform them safely. 

Limit alcohol intake while using this medication as it causes an increased risk of developing side effects such as high blood sugar and a high ketone level.  

Before undergoing surgery (especially glaucoma or cataract surgery), make sure the doctor is aware that you are taking Glyxambi.

Geriatric patients are at an increased risk of the side effects of this medication such as dehydration, dizziness, kidney problems, and low blood pressure.  

Diabetes may worsen due to pregnancy, so call your doctor for consultations about managing your blood sugar levels during pregnancy.  

It is unknown if this medication passes into breastmilk, so contact your doctor for consultations if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.  

GLYXAMBI SIDE EFFECTS 

The common side effects of Glyxambi include lightheadedness, dizziness, increased urination, bladder infection, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, or sneezing. Glyxambi and weight loss are commonly associated as there are reports of patients losing 3% of their body weight. Stop taking this medication and call your doctor to seek medical attention if you start experiencing:

GLYXAMBI DOSAGE

This medication comes as a combo pill in the following strengths: the Glyxambi 10 mg/5 mg and Glyxambi 25 mg/5 mg tablet.  

For patients with type 2 diabetes, the recommended dosage is Glyxambi 10mg/5mg taken orally, once daily in the morning. This medication tablet can be taken with or without food and must be administered in adjunct to a proper diet and exercise regimen.  

The dosage may be increased to Glyxambi 25mg/5mg, taken orally once daily, depending on the patient’s condition and tolerance. 

In case you missed a dose, take the medication tablet as soon as you remember. However, it is almost time for the next scheduled dose for your condition, skip the missed dose and take the next one. You should not take a double dose of this medication to make up for missed dose. 

For those experiencing overdose symptoms such as fainting or trouble breathing, call the local emergency hotline and seek medical attention immediately.
