About Creon 25

Uses and Benefits of Creon 25

Creon 25 is indicated for the treatment of pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) in children and adults. This condition occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough enzymes for digestion. Creon 25 is used to manage PEI caused by cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, or other pancreatic diseases.

Doctors may prescribe it for conditions including cystic fibrosis (a rare inherited disorder), acute pancreatitis (sudden inflammation of the pancreas), and chronic pancreatitis (long-term inflammation of the pancreas). It is also used after pancreatic surgery or pancreatectomy, gastrectomy (partial or complete removal of the stomach), or pancreatic cancer treatment. Other uses include managing PEI after gastrointestinal bypass surgery, such as Billroth II gastroenterostomy, or in cases of pancreatic or bile duct obstruction, often caused by tumors. Additionally, it is used to treat Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, a rare genetic disorder.

Ingredients in Creon 25

The active ingredient in Creon 25 is pancreatin. Creon contains a blend of pancreatic enzymes, including lipase, amylase, and protease. Inactive ingredients include cetyl alcohol, dimethicone 1000, gelatin, hypromellose phthalate, iron oxides, macrogol 4000, sodium lauryl sulfate, titanium dioxide, and triethyl citrate.

How to Use Creon 25?

Follow your doctor’s prescription exactly.

Creon 25 doses are measured in lipase units, one of the enzymes in the medication. Different strengths of the medication contain varying amounts of lipase. Swallow the capsules whole without crushing or chewing them. If swallowing is difficult, open the capsules and mix the granules with a small amount of soft, acidic food like applesauce or yogurt, or an acidic liquid like apple, orange, or pineapple juice.

For infants, the granules can be mixed with milk on a weaning spoon and given immediately. Avoid adding granules to a baby’s bottle. Swallow the mixture right away without crushing or chewing, followed by water or juice. Do not mix with non-acidic foods or crush the granules, as this can cause irritation in your mouth or affect how the medication works.

Do not store prepared mixtures or hold the capsules or granules in your mouth. Drink plenty of fluids daily while using this medication. Take the medication as directed by your doctor. Most patients with pancreatic conditions will need to use Creon 25 for life.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take your next dose at your usual time with your next meal. Do not double up on doses to make up for the missed one.

Overdose

In case of an overdose, contact a healthcare provider, emergency department, or Poison Control Center immediately, even if there are no symptoms. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Extremely high doses of pancreatic enzymes can sometimes lead to high levels of uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia) or urine (hyperuricosuria).

Who Should Not Use Creon 25?

Do not use Creon 25 if you are allergic to porcine (pig) protein, pancreatic enzymes, or any other ingredient in this medication. Refer to the ingredients section for a complete list of ingredients.
