Drug Description :

Indication : Colchicine is used to treat gout in adults and to treat a genetic condition called Familial Mediterranean Fever in adults and children over 4 years of age. Genetic forms of Colchicine have been used to treat or prevent attacks of gout, or to treat symptoms of Behcets syndrome. Colchicine is not a cure for gouty arthritis or Behcets syndrome and will not prevent these diseases from progressing.

Storage : Store Colchicine at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.

Precaution : Colchicine was developed before federal regulations requiring FDA review of all marketed drug products. Therefore not all uses for Colchicine are approved bythe FDA. As of 2009, Colcrys is the only brand of Colchicine that has been approved by the FDA. Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, heart disease, a stomach ulcer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, intestinal bleeding, or any severe gastrointestinal disorder before taking Colchicine. It is not know whether Colchicine is harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you plan on becoming pregnant before taking this medication. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby.

Warnings : Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can interact with Colchicine and lead to dangerous effects. Discuss the use of grapefruit juice products with your doctor. Do not change the amount of grapefruit products in your diet without telling your doctor.

Patient Family Information  : Take Colchicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take this medication in larger amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow your instructions carefully. Colchicine can be taken with or without food. If you are using this medication to treat a gout attack, take Colchicine at the first sign of an attack. The longer you wait to start taking Colchicine, the less effective it will be. Your dose will depend on why you are using this medication. Colchicine doses for gout and Mediterranean fever are different. You may need to take a second lower dose of Colchicine 1 hour after your first dose if you still have gout pain. If you use this medication for a long period of time, your blood may need to be tested on a regular basis. Attend all of your scheduled appointments.

Contraindication : Do not use this medication if you are allergic to Colchicine. Do not use Colchicine if you have liver or kidney disease or if you are taking a drug that can interact with Colchicine. Ask your doctor about what drugs can affect Colchicine.

Sever Side Effects : Seek emergency medical attention if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction to Colchicine such as: rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue. Call your doctor if you experience any

Common Side Effects : Less serious side effects include: mild nausea or stomach pain; or mild diarrhea.
