What is Zovirax?
Zovirax (Acyclovir) is a prescription medication that helps with the treatment of infections caused by herpes viruses, such as chickenpox, shingles, cold sores, and genital herpes. It also helps to prevent the spread of the virus in the body. It is not a certain cure for herpes, but it can reduce the symptoms of herpes infection.
Zovirax belongs to a class of drugs called purine nucleosidesm, which works by fighting the virus that causes these symptoms. It may take up to three (3) days before you experience the benefit as symptoms begin to decrease.

Zovirax is not recommended to be used as a protection against the spread of genital herpes. Do not have sexual intercourse if there is an outbreak or if you or your partner is experiencing symptoms. Always use an effective barrier methods of birth control during sexual intercourse, such as male condoms, diaphragms, sponges, and cervical caps.
This medication must only be administered at extreme necessity during pregnancy. Talking to your doctor or pharmacist is advised to discuss the risks and benefits of taking this medication while pregnant.
This medication passes into breast milk but is unlikely to cause harm to a nursing baby, so inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.

Zovirax Dosage

- For the treatment of genital herpes, the recommended starting dose is 200 mg, taken orally every 4 hours for 10 days, or 400 mg, taken orally every 8 hours for 7 – 10 days.
- If recurrence happens, the dosage for intermittent treatment is 200 mg, taken orally every 4 hours for 5 days. The dosage for chronic suppression is 400 mg, taken orally, every 12 hours for 12 months, or 200 mg, taken orally 3 or 5 times daily.
- For the treatment of herpes zoster, the recommended dosage for acute treatment is 800 mg, taken orally every 4 hours 5 times daily for 7 – 10 days.
- For patients with varicella zoster or chickenpox, if the patient is less than 40 kg, the recommended dosage is 800 mg, taken orally every 6 hours for 5 days.
In case you missed a dose of this medication, take the medication tablet as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose for your condition, skip the missed dose and take the next one. Don’t take a double dose of Zovirax to make up for the missed dosage.
In case you are experiencing fainting or trouble breathing, which are possible symptoms of an overdose, call the local emergency hotline and seek medical attention immediately.
