Zegerid is used to treat symptoms of heartburn or irritation of the esophagus caused by gastoesophageal reflux disease. Zegerid can also treat stomach ulcers or intestinal ulcers. Zegerid may also be used to decrease the risk of stomach bleeding in very ill patients. This medication is a proton pump inhibitor and sodium bicarbonate combination. The protein pump inhibitor decreases the amount of acid in the stomach, and the sodium bicarbonate slows the breakdown of the protein pump inhibitor in the stomach.

Zegerid should be stored at room temperature away from moisture, light, and heat. Keep Zegerid out of the reach of children and pets.

Some medical conditions can interact with Zegerid and cause unwanted effects. Tell your doctor if you are taking any prescription or non prescription medications or if you have had heartburn for more than 3 months or heartburn with lightheadedness, sweating, or dizziness. If you have frequent chest pain, wheezing, unexplained weight loss, nausea or vomiting, or stomach pain, tell your doctor before taking Zeregid. If you have symptoms such as trouble or pain swallowing food, black, tarry, or bloody stools, or vomit that looks like coffee beans, let your doctor know before you take Zeregid. Tell your doctor if you have liver problems, stomach or bowel cancer, Bartter syndrome, low blood potassium levels, acid-base balance problems, respiratory alkalosis, or undiagnosed bleeding from the rectum before taking this medication. Zeregid can cause drowsiness or dizziness. These side effects can become worse if you take Zeregid with alcohol. Do not perform any dangerous tasks until you know how you react to Zeregid. Zeregid contains sodium. Include this medication when you count your daily intake of sodium. Talk to your doctor about drinking milk or taking calcium supplements with Zeregid.

Take Zegerid exactly as instructed by your doctor. Read the medicine label for exact instructions. Take Zegerid by mouth on an empty stomach one hour before eating will a full glass of water. Do not take this medication with other liquids. Swallow the capsule whole. Do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing. Do not open the capsule.
