What Is Xarelto (Rivaroxaban)?
Xarelto medication is indicated to treat and prevent blood clots, which can be fatal. This medication belongs to a class of medicines known as blood thinners (also called anticoagulants). Xarelto’s generic name is Rivaroxaban.
Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) is used to treat the following conditions in adults:
- Lowers the risk of stroke and blood clots with AFib, not caused by heart valve problems.
- Treats deep vein thrombosis (DVT or blood clots in the legs) and pulmonary embolism (PE or blood clots in the lungs).
- Decreases the recurrence of DVT and PE after receiving treatment for at least six months.
- Prevents blood clots following hip or knee replacement surgery, being hospitalized with acute illness, and those who are at high risk for clot formation.
- Reduces the risk of heart-related problems in people with coronary artery disease (CAD).
- Lowers the risk of circulatory problems and complications in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD).
Meanwhile, this medication is also used for treating children with the following conditions:
- Treats venous thromboembolism (VTE) and reduces recurrence of VTE after receiving at least five days of treatment with injectable blood thinners in children from birth to <18 years.
- Prevents blood clot formation in individuals two years old and above with congenital heart disease after the Fontan procedure.
How to Use Xarelto (Rivaroxaban)
The Xarelto dosage must be individualized according to the needs of the patient. It is typically based on the severity of the client’s existing health problem, any coexisting illnesses, and how they respond to the regimen.
When using this anticoagulant, read all prescription information and follow all the directions carefully. If you are unsure about how to use this oral medication, talk to your doctor or pharmacist for clarification.
The following are the Xarelto uses and recommended dosages:
- The typical dosage of Xarelto to decrease the risk of stroke and blood clots in patients with AFib is 20 mg once a day with food.
- The initial dose to treat DVT and PE is 15 mg twice daily for 21 days and 20 mg once a day with food at the same time each day.
- The suggested intake to prevent the recurrence of DVT and PE is to take 10 mg once daily with food after at least six months of standard anticoagulant therapy.
- The usual dose to prevent blood clots following hip or knee replacement surgery is 10 mg once daily, with or without food, six to ten hours after the procedure. This medication is used for 12 days for knee replacement surgery and 35 days for hip replacement surgery.
- For the prevention of VTE, the recommended daily intake is 10 mg starting in the hospital and continuing after discharge for a total of 31 to 39 days with or without food.
- The usual dose to decrease the risk of heart-related problems in patients with CAD and PAD is 2.5 mg two times a day, plus aspirin (75 to 100 mg) once daily with or without food.
For children:
- The Xarelto dose for children is based on their weight, usually given one to three times a day, as prescribed.
The following are the directions for administering Rivaroxaban:
