Viread is used in the treatment of infection in combination with other medicines. It can also help treat a hepatitis B infection. Viread is an antiviral reverse transcriptase inhibitor. Viread works to treat HIV by reducing the amount of HIV in the body by stopping the virus from multiplying. Viread treats HBV infections by reducing the amount of HBV in the body and by blocking the ability of the virus to spread and infect new cells in the liver. Viread is not a cure for HIV or AIDS.

Before you use Viread, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant. This medication may harm a baby. If you are breastfeeding a baby, tell your doctor before taking Viread – it is possible that ingredients in Viread can pass through breast milk and harm a nursing baby. Mothers with HIV should not be breast-feeding at all. Tell your doctor about all prescription, non presctiption, herbal medications, or dietary supplements before taking Viread. If you have a history of bone problems, liver problems or kidney problems, or if you are overweight, tell your doctor before taking Viread. Tell your doctor if you have an HIV infection before using Viread.
viread can cause dizziness. This can worsen if you take Viread with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Viread carefully and do not drive or perform unsafe tasks until you know how your body reacts with Viread. If you have an HIV infections, you must be tested for HBV before you take Viread. If you have and HBV infection, you should be tested for HIV before you take Viread. Viread is not a cure for HIV. Patients can still get illnesses and infections associated with HIV. Stay under the care of a doctor. Viread does not stop the spread of HIV or HBV to others through blood or sexual contact. Use barrier methods of birth control such as condoms if you have an HIV infection. Check with your doctor to see if you should take a calcium and vitamin D supplement while you are taking Viread.
Patient Family Information : Use this medication as directed by your doctor. Check the label on your prescription bottle for dosing instructions or ask your doctor or pharmacist. Take Viread by mouth with or without food. Keep taking Viread even if you feel well. Taking this medication at the same time each day will allow you to benefit most from Viread and will ensure you will remember to take it. Do not stop taking Viread suddenly. This may cause the virus to become immune to this medicine, or other medicines. Some conditions such as hepatitis B can become worse if you suddenly stop taking Viread without the advice of a doctor. If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing regime. Never take two doses at once.
Do not use Viread if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Viread. If you have a history of abnormal liver function tests, severe liver problems, or lactic acidosis, do not take Viread. Some medications react with Viread. Do not take Viread if you already take adefovir or other medicines that contain tenofovir. If you take a medicine that can harm your kineys such as an aminoglycoside antibiotic, amphotericin B, cyclosporine, a nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drug (ibuprophen), or tacrolimus, do not use Viread. Virad can react with some medicines and cause unwanted side effects.
