Vantin is a cephalosporin antibiotic that is used in treating mild or moderate infections caused by specific bacteria. Vantin is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by interfering with the creation of a bacteria’s cell wall so that the wall bursts and the bacteria die.
Store Vantin at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Do not store Vantin in the bathroom. Replace the cap securely after each opening. Keep Vantin out of reach of pets and children
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant before taking Vantin. The ingredients in Vantin may be harmful to your baby. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby. If you are taking and prescription medications, non prescription medications, herbal medications, or dietary supplements, tell your doctor before taking Vantin. If you have diarrhea, a stomach or intestinal infection, or a blood clotting problem, tell your doctor before taking Vantin. Inform your doctor if you have had a severe allergic reaction to a penicillin antibiotic or other beta-lactam antibiotic. Some medicines may interact with Vantin. Tell your health care professional if you are taking any other medicines before taking Vantin, especially any of the following: Aminoglycosides (gentamicin), cyclosporine, or diuretics (furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide) because your risk of side effects in the kidney may be increased.
Mild diarrhea is common with antibiotic use. But a more serious form of diarrhea (pseudomembraneous colitis) may rarely occur. This can form while you use the antibiotic, or within several months after you stop using it. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools. Do not treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor. Vantin works only against bacteria. It does not treat viral infections. Be sure to use Vantin for the full course of treatment. If you neglect this step, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely. The bacteria could also become immune to this or other medicines. This could make the infections harder to treat in the future. Long term or repeated use of Vantin can cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Your liver function, kidney function, and complete blood cell counts may be performed while you use Vantin. These tests are to monitor
Patient Family Information: Use Vantin exactly as directed by your doctor. Check the label or with your doctor for exact dosing instructions. Take Vantin orally with food. This medication works best if it is taken at the same time each day. To clear up an infection completely, take Vantin for the full course of treatment. Keep taking Vantin even if you begin to feel better. If you miss a dose of Vantin, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take more than one dose at a time. Vantin should not be taken within 2 hours of antacids or H2 antagonists such as famotidine.
Do not use Vantin if you are allergic to any ingredient in Vantin or to any other cephalosporin antibiotic (cephalexin, cefprozil). Contact your doctor if this applies to you before taking Vantin. Vantin can pass through breast milk and affect a nursing baby. Do not use Vantin if you are breast-feeding a baby.
