This medication is used to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children as young as 12 months old and relieve runny nose and sneezing caused by allergies in adults and children as young as 6 months old. Singulair (Montelukast) is also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, when the air passages in the lung narrow, in people not currently taking this medication for other conditions. Do not use Singulair (Montelukast) to prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction if you are already taking this medication to prevent asthma or allergy symptoms.
This medication should be stored at room temperature. Keep the medication away from heat and moisture. A packet of oral granules should not be opened until you are ready to use the medication.
Inform your doctor about the following before taking Singulair (Montelukast): if you are allergic to any drugs, especially aspirin; pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Before taking the chewable tablet, let your doctor know if you have phenylketonuria (PKU) because the chewable tablet may contain phenylalanine.
Patient Family Information: Read the directions on the prescription label. Do not take larger doses than prescribed by your doctor. Do not take this medication longer than recommended by your doctor. Take this medication as directed by your doctor. Patients using Singulair (Montelukast) to prevent asthma or allergy symptoms should take it once in the evening every day. Patients using Singulair (Montelukast) to treat exercise-induced bronchoconstriction should take a single dose 2 hours prior to exercise. Do not take another dose until at least 24 hours later. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. If you are taking the chewable tablet, the tablet must be chewed before being swallowed. Inform your doctor if this medication does not seem to work as well in treating or preventing asthma attacks. Singulair (Montelukast) will take up to several weeks to improve your symptoms, make sure you continue taking the medication as directed for the best results. Inform your doctor if you notice your symptoms do not improve
Do not use Singulair (Montelukast) if you are allergic to Montelukast or to treat as an asthma attack that has already started because the medication does not work fast enough to reverse the symptoms of an asthma attack. Also, do not use Singulair (Montelukast) to treat exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, if you are currently using it to prevent asthma or allergy symptoms. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice any mood or behavior changes, depression, anxiety, or thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.

Common: Tooth pain; stomach pain, nausea, heartburn, diarrhea, or upset stomach; tired feeling; headache; mild rash; or fever, stuffy nose, hoarseness, cough, or sore throat.
