What is Serevent Diskus?
Serevent Diskus (salmeterol xinafoate) is a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist indicated as a long-term treatment for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It addresses symptoms like wheezing and trouble breathing. This oral inhalation works by relaxing bronchial smooth muscles and inhibiting the release of immediate hypersensitivity mediators.
This drug is available in Serevent Diskus 50 mcg/inhalation.
Directions in using Serevent Diskus
Before you begin to use this medication, make sure to read the medication guide or leaflet provided. Go through and understand all the information in the printed guide. You may ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have additional questions regarding this drug or if you need further medical advice.
Take this medication based on the advice of your physician. If you are advised to take it regularly, take it at the same time each day. Make a dosing schedule to avoid forgetting your dose. Do not alter your dosage as it is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Additionally, do not stop taking this medication abruptly to avoid worsening or withdrawal symptoms.
If you are using this medication only to prevent asthma attacks caused by strenuous activities such as exercise, use it 30 minutes before starting your activity. Then, do not use any other asthma medications or inhalers for the next 12 hours. You may only administer a rescue inhaler in case of breathing difficulties.
How to use Serevent Diskus
- Take your Serevent Diskus out. Locate the label. On the first line of the label, write the date the packaging was opened and on the second line, write the date when the Diskus should be disposed of – it should be 6 weeks or 42 days after you opened the pouch.
- To open your Diskus, hold it with one hand and use the other hand to push the grip away until you see the mouthpiece.
- Hold the inhaler in a flat position, the mouthpiece facing you. Then, push the lever away from the mouthpiece. You will hear a click. Now, check the counter of the inhaler. If it indicates “1”, it is ready for use.
- Exhale deeply and slowly through your mouth. Then, put the mouthpiece inside your mouth and close or seal your lips around it.
- Inhale fully but quickly through your mouth. You may taste something upon inhalation as the Diskus delivers very fine powder.
- Hold your breathing for about ten seconds or longer, and remove the Diskus from your mouth.
- Exhale fully again.
- Do not forget to close the Diskus by pushing the thumb grip back.
