WHAT IS PROMACTA?
Promacta (Eltrombopag) is a prescription medication that helps treat patients suffering from low platelet count caused by chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) or chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV). It is also helpful in the treatment of severe aplastic anemia.
It belongs to a class of drugs called hematopoietic growth factors, thrombopoietin receptor agonists, or platelet-stimulating agents. It works by binding to a thrombopoietin receptor, which is a hormone that is responsible for the regulation and production of platelets. By doing so, it stimulates more production of platelets in the bloodstream.

PROMACTA FAQs
What is Promacta used for?
Healthcare professionals prescribe Promacta for ITP (chronic immune thrombocytopenia), HCV (chronic hepatitis C virus), and SAA (severe aplastic anemia). It is used for increasing the production of platelets in the bloodstream and reducing the risk of bleeding.
What is Promacta’s mechanism of action?
Promacta binds to a thrombopoietin receptor and sends a signal to produce an increased number of platelets into the bloodstream.
Nplate vs Promacta: Which is better?
Both medications are thrombopoietin receptor agonists and are both prescribed for the treatment of chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP).
Nplate (Romiplostim) is administered via a syringe, while Promacta (Eltrombopag) is administered as a tablet. As they are similar medications, they also have similar side effects. Only Nplate can cause changes in bone marrow, bronchitis, and sinusitis, while only Promacta can cause urinary tract infections and cataracts.
