WHAT IS NITOMAN?  

Nitoman (Tetrabenazine) is a prescription medication that helps with the treatment of uncontrollable movements of the muscle caused by Huntington’s disease. It is not the cure for movements and only reduces it to help make normal daily activities easier. Nitoman’s drug class is VMAT2 inhibitors, which work by reducing the number of certain chemicals in the brain that are responsible for movements.  

NITOMAN PRECAUTIONS 

Before taking Nitoman, contact a healthcare professional if you are allergic to the ingredients of this medication or have any other allergies. Inform your healthcare provider if you have a family history or a medical condition that includes one or more of the following. 

  • Heart Problems 
  • Liver Problems 
  • Kidney Problems
  • Breast Cancer
  • Severe Sweating
  • Severe Diarrhea
  • Severe Vomiting
  • Low Levels of Potassium/Magnesium
  • Untreated Depression/Suicidal Thoughts 

Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires focus and alertness, as this medication causes you to experience blurry vision. Avoid these activities until you are certain you can perform them safely. 

Before undergoing surgery (especially glaucoma or cataract surgery), make sure the doctor is aware that you are taking Nitoman. 

Before undergoing a dental procedure, make sure the dentist is aware that you are taking Nitoman. 

Geriatric patients are at an increased risk of this drug’s side effects, such as QT prolongation. 

This medication must only be used under extreme necessity when pregnant. Consult your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using this medication during pregnancy. 

It is unknown if this drug gets into breast milk, therefore advise your doctor if you are or plan to be a breastfeeding mother. 

NITOMAN SIDE EFFECTS 

The common side effects of Nitoman include tiredness, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, depressed mood, anxiety, and restlessness. Stop taking Nitoman and call your doctor to seek medical attention if you start experiencing: 

  • Restlessness 
  • Severe Dizziness 
  • Severe Fainting

NITOMAN DOSAGE 

Regarding the prescribed dose for your condition, follow your healthcare provider’s advice. This medication comes in 25 mg tablets. 

For the treatment of involuntary movement disorder (chorea) associated with Huntington’s disease, the recommended starting dose is 12.5 mg, taken orally once daily. After a week, the dose must be increased to 12.5 mg, taken orally, two times a day, every 12 hours.  

If the daily dose is 37.5 to 50 mg per day, administer it into divided doses every 8 hours (3 times a day regimen). 

If you missed a dose, take the medication tablet as soon as you remember. However, it is almost time for the next scheduled dose for your condition, skip the missed dose and take the next one. Don’t take a double dose of this medication to make up for the missed dosage.  

In the event of an overdose, or if you are suffering overdose symptoms like fainting or difficulties breathing, call 911 and get medical help right away. 

Keep this medication in a clean, dry area at room temperature.
