Minocycline (a generic option for Minocin) is a medication used in the treatment of certain infections or may be used in combination with other medications to treat severe acne.

Storage

Precautions

Tell your doctor of any medical conditions or medications especially if:

• You are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
• You are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement.
• You have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances.
• You have kidney problems.
• You have an autoimmune disorder.

Warnings

• Minocycline (generic option for Minocin) may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or lightheadedness.
• Do not drive or participate in any other potentially dangerous behavior until you are aware of how you will react to Minocycline.
• Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you will react to minocycline as this medication may cause you to burn more easily.
• Long-term or repeated use of Minocycline may cause a second infection.
• Minocycline only works against bacteria and will not treat a viral infection.
• Mild diarrhea is common with antibiotic use, but if a more serious form of diarrhea occurs, contact your doctor immediately.
• Tell your dentist or doctor you are taking Minocycline before you have any dental work or surgery.
• Hormonal birth control may not work as well while you are taking Minocycline.
• You should use an extra method of birth control, such as condoms while taking Minocycline.
• Use extreme caution when giving Minocycline to the elderly as they may be more sensitive to the medication.
• Minocycline should not be used in children.

Patient Family Information

• Always follow the instructions given to you by your doctor when taking Minocycline. Ask your doctor if you can take Minocycline with food as some brands allow it while others require an empty stomach.
• Take Minocycline by mouth with a full glass of water and do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking the medication.
• If you are taking bismuth salts, calcium salts, colestipol, iron salts, magnesium, urinary alkalinizers, sucralfate, vitamins/minerals, quinapril, didanosine, or zinc salts, do not take them within 2-3 hours before or after taking Minocycline.
• For the best results, take Minocycline at approximately the same time every day.

Contraindication

Do not take Minocycline (generic option for Minocin) if you are:

• Allergic to any ingredient in the medication.
• Taking acitretin, qisotretinoin, methoxyflurane, or penicillin.
