What is Glumetza?

Glumetza (Metformin) is a prescription medication that helps with improving blood sugar control in adult patients suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus. It can also be administered with insulin and/or other medications, however, this medication is not recommended for patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

It belongs to a class of drugs called antidiabetics, biguanides, which works by reducing the amount of sugar your liver makes and the amount of sugar your intestines absorb. By doing so, the body will respond better to insulin.

Glumetza Precautions

  • Severe Asthma
  • Blood Problems
  • Anemia
  • Vitamin B12 Deficiency
  • Kidney Disease
  • Liver Disease
  • Heart Disease

Before undergoing surgery or a scanning (X-RAY) procedure that uses iodinated contrast, inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are using. You may stop taking this medication for a brief time for the surgery or procedure. Consult your healthcare provider for instructions prior to the surgery or procedure.

Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires focus and alertness as this medication causes you to experience blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness caused by extremely low or high blood sugar. Avoid these activities until you are certain you can perform them safely. Avoid alcohol or cannabis (marijuana) intake to avoid worsening these side effects.

Limit alcohol intake while using this medication as it increases the risk of developing lactic acidosis and low blood sugar.

High fever, excessive sweating, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting are likely to cause dehydration and increase the risk of lactic acidosis. Stop taking this medication and inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience prolonged diarrhea or vomiting. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids, as directed by your doctor.

A stressed body (due to surgery, injury, infection, or fever) may make your blood sugar harder to be controlled. Consult your healthcare provider as increased stress may affect your treatment plan, medications, or blood sugar testing.

Geriatric patients are at an increased risk of side effects, such as low blood sugar or lactic acidosis.

Glumetza must only be administered at extreme necessity during pregnancy. Your healthcare provider may advise you to use insulin instead of this medication. Consulting your doctor or pharmacist is advised to discuss the risks and benefits of using this medication while pregnant.

Glumetza may cause menstrual changes (promote ovulation) and put you at an increased risk of becoming pregnant. Consulting your doctor is advised to discuss reliable forms of birth control while taking this medication.

Glumetza passes into breast milk in small amounts and poses possible harm to a nursing baby. Consulting your doctor is advised before breastfeeding.

Glumetza Side Effects

The common side effects of Glumetza include nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea, weakness, tiredness, low blood sugar, or a metallic taste in the mouth.

Although unusual, this medication may increase the risk of developing low blood sugar or hypoglycemia. This may occur when this medication is administered together with other diabetic medications. Inform your healthcare provider regarding the possibility of the dose being lowered.

Bring glucose tablets or gel with you at all times to treat low blood sugar in emergencies. You can take quick sources of sugar, such as table sugar, candy, honey, fruit juice, or non-diet soda in case low blood sugar occurs.

Hypoglycemia may occur due to excessive alcohol intake, excessive heavy exercise, or lack of calorie intake. Eating meals on a regular schedule and not skipping meals may help to prevent this from happening. Consult your healthcare provider regarding your next steps in case you miss a meal.

This is not the complete list of the adverse effects of Glumetza. Call your doctor for medical advice about the side effects you may experience from this medication.
