What is Geodon?

Geodon (Ziprasidone) is a prescription medication that helps with the treatment of agitation in people with schizophrenia and manic symptoms of bipolar disorder in adults and children aged 10 years old and above.

It belongs to a class of drugs called atypical antipsychotics, which works by rebalancing dopamine and serotonin to restore the balance of natural substances in the brain.

Geodon Precautions

Before using Geodon, contact a healthcare professional if you are allergic to the ingredients of this medication or have any other allergies. Inform your healthcare provider further if you or a member of your family has suffered or is suffering from the following medical conditions:

  • Dementia
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Seizures (Convulsions)
  • Low White Blood Cell Count
  • Difficulty Swallowing
  • Sleep Apnea (Trouble Breathing while Asleep)
  • Heart Disease (Coronary Artery Disease, Irregular Heartbeat)

Geodon puts you at an increased risk of developing a condition that affects the heart rhythm, called QT prolongation. Seek medical attention right away if you start experiencing side effects, such as irregular heartbeat, dizziness, drowsiness, and fainting.

The risk of developing QT prolongation can be further increased if you have other medical conditions or are taking other medications that increase the risk of QT prolongation. Before using Geodon medication, inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you take and if you have any of the following conditions, such as heart problems (QT prolongation, heart failure, slow heartbeat), and family history of heart problems (sudden cardiac death, QT prolongation).

This also puts you at an increased risk of sweating less, which increases the risk of heatstroke. Avoid activities that will cause you to overheat, drink a lot of fluids, and dress lightly. Rest and cool down in case of overheating. Seek medical attention immediately if you start experiencing persistent fever, mood or mental changes, dizziness, drowsiness, or headache.

Potassium or magnesium deficiency also puts you at an increased risk of QT prolongation. The risk can be further increased if you use water pills or diuretics, or if you have a medical condition, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or severe sweating.

Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires focus and alertness as this medication causes you to experience dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid these activities until you are certain you can perform them safely. Avoid alcohol or cannabis (marijuana) intake to avoid worsening these side effects.

Before undergoing surgery, make sure the doctor is aware that you are taking Geodon.

Before undergoing a dental procedure, make sure the dentist is aware that you are taking Geodon.

Geodon must only be administered at extreme necessity during pregnancy. Consulting your doctor or pharmacist is advised to discuss the risks and benefits of using this medication while pregnant. Infants born to mothers who have taken this medication during the last 3 months of pregnancy are at an increased risk of developing symptoms, such as constant crying, feeding or breathing difficulties, drowsiness, dizziness, muscle stiffness, and/or shakiness.

Geodon passes into breast milk and may pose harm to a nursing baby, so inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.

Geodon Side Effects

The common side effects of Geodon include vision problems, tremors (shakiness), restlessness, lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, trouble swallowing, weight gain, runny or stuffy nose, and cough. Stop using Geodon, report side effects, and seek medical attention if you start experiencing:

  • Trouble Swallowing
  • Chest Pain
  • Pounding Heartbeat
  • Uncontrolled Muscle Movements
  • Red or Swollen Gums
  • Increased Thirst
  • Increased Urination
  • Confusion
  • Agitation
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Tremor (Shakiness)
  • Mood or Mental Changes (Restlessness)
  • Vision Changes
  • Trouble Breathing While Asleep
  • Allergic Reaction (Hives, Rash, Swelling)

Geodon puts you at an increased risk of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). Inform your healthcare provider if you start experiencing side effects such as increased thirst or urination. If you have diabetes mellitus, monitor your blood sugar regularly and share the results with your healthcare provider. There may be an adjustment needed to your exercise program, diet, and diabetes medication.

This medication puts you at an increased risk of weight gain and high blood cholesterol. These side effects, combined with diabetes, may put you at an increased risk of heart disease.

This medication puts you at an increased risk of developing tardive dyskinesia, or repetitive muscle movements that may become permanent. Inform your healthcare provider right away if you start developing symptoms, such as uncontrolled or unusual body movements.

This medication may increase prolactin, a hormone made by the pituitary gland, and lead to unwanted breast milk, difficulty becoming pregnant, and missed or stopped periods. It may lead to decreased sexual ability, enlarged breasts, and the inability to produce sperm for males.

This medication puts you at an increased risk of developing a serious condition called a neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Inform your healthcare provider if you start experiencing symptoms, such as fever, stiffness, pain, tenderness, weakness of the muscle, severe tiredness, severe confusion, sweating, dark urine, change in the amount of urine, and sweating.

If a painful or prolonged erection for more than 4 hours occurs, seek medical attention immediately.

This is not the complete list of the adverse reactions of Geodon. For medical advice on the possible adverse effects of this drug, contact your doctor.
