Factive is an antibiotic, which means that it can only be used for bacterial infections.

Factive puts you at an increased risk of developing a condition that affects the heart rhythm, called QT prolongation. Seek medical attention right away if you start experiencing side effects, such as irregular heartbeat, dizziness, drowsiness, and fainting.

  • The risk of developing QT prolongation can be further increased if you have other medical conditions or are taking other medications that increase the risk of QT prolongation. Before using Factive antibiotics, inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you take and if you have any of the following conditions, such as heart problems (QT prolongation, heart failure, slow heartbeat), and family history of heart problems (sudden cardiac death, QT prolongation).
  • Potassium or magnesium deficiency also puts you at an increased risk of QT prolongation. The risk can be further increased if you use water pills or diuretics, or if you have a medical condition, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or severe sweating.

Factive puts you at an increased risk of developing changes in your blood sugar, especially if you are suffering from diabetes mellitus. Monitor your blood sugar regularly and share the results with your doctor if they are too high or too low. Seek medical attention immediately if you start experiencing symptoms of high blood sugar, such as tingling hands or feet, dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, hunger, fast heartbeat, tremor (shakiness), and sudden sweating.

  • Carry glucose tablets or gel, and quick sources of sugar in case of low blood sugar. Eat meals regularly, and do not skip to prevent low blood sugar.

Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires focus and alertness as this medication causes you to experience dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid these activities until you are certain you can perform them safely. Avoid alcohol or cannabis (marijuana) intake to avoid worsening these side effects.

Factive may lead to increased sensitivity to the sun. Limit your time under the sun and avoid direct sunlight to not worsen this risk. Always use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when going outside to protect your skin. Inform your doctor immediately if you get sunburned or start developing skin blisters or redness.

Inform your healthcare provider that you are taking Factive before having any immunizations or vaccinations. This medication may cause live bacterial vaccines to be not as effective or cause a reaction.

Before undergoing surgery, make sure the doctor is aware that you are taking Factive.

Before undergoing a dental procedure, make sure the dentist is aware that you are taking Factive.

Pediatric patients are at an increased risk of developing joint or tendon problems while taking this medication. Consult your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking this medication.

Geriatric patients are at an increased risk of developing tendon problems (especially if they are also taking corticosteroid medications), sudden tears or breaks in the aorta and QT prolongation.

Factive must only be administered at extreme necessity during pregnancy. Consulting your doctor or pharmacist is advised to discuss the risks and benefits of using this medication while pregnant.

Factive passes into breast milk in small amounts, so inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.

This condition is more likely to occur during treatment or weeks to months after withdrawing from this medication. Avoid taking anti-diarrhea or opioid products if you have these symptoms as it will only make them worse.

Prolonged or repeated use of Factive may lead to oral thrush or a new yeast infection. Inform your doctor right away if you start experiencing symptoms, such as a change in vaginal discharge and white patches in the mouth.

Factive puts you at an increased risk of developing a mild rash that is usually not serious. However, this makes it hard to tell it apart from the rash caused by an allergic reaction.
