Exelon Patch (Rivastigmine) is a prescription medicine used to treat dementia (deterioration in cognitive function) that is caused by Alzheimer’s Disease or Parkinson’s Disease. This medication will not cure either of the diseases but will be helpful in improving cognitive functions.
Exelon Patch works by boosting and restoring the levels of acetylcholine in the brain. Acetylcholine is an organic chemical in our brain that works as a neurotransmitter, which is a chemical messenger that is responsible for sending signals from nerve cells to target cells.
EXELON PATCH PRECAUTIONS
Before using Rivastigmine, contact a healthcare professional if you are allergic to it, or have any other allergies. Inform them further if you have a family or medical history of:
- Fainting
- Seizures
- Heart Disease
- Lung/Breathing Problems
- Stomach/Intestinal Problems
- Urinary Problems
- Liver Disease
- Kidney Disease
Before using the Exelon patch, consult your doctor first if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant or if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.
Using the Exelon patch may cause you to experience drowsiness or dizziness. Avoid or limit consuming alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) to avoid worsening these side effects. Do not drive or do hazardous activities that require focus or alertness until you are capable to properly perform

Exelon patch must be placed in an area of the skin where it is unlikely to be rubbed by tight clothing.
EXELON PATCH SIDE EFFECTS
The common side effects of Exelon Patch are nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, weakness, changes in body weight, headache, trouble sleeping, anxiety, dizziness, drowsiness, tremor, and upset stomach. Stop using Exelon Patch and seek medical attention immediately if you start experiencing serious side effects spread beyond the patch that does not improve within 48 hours after removal. Serious side effects include:

EXELON PATCH DOSE
Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding the dosage for your condition.
Exelon Patch comes in 4.6 mg, 9.5 mg, and 13.3 mg doses.
- For treating dementia associated with Alzheimer’s Disease, the recommended starting dose is the 4.6 mg dose, every 24 hours. The dose may only be increased to 9.5 mg after four (4) weeks if the dose is well-tolerated. The dose may be increased to 13.3 mg after an additional four (4) weeks.
- For mild to moderate Alzheimer’s Disease, the recommended dose range is 9.5 mg to 13.3 mg, every 24 hours.
- For moderate to severe Alzheimer’s Disease, the recommended dose is 13.3 mg, every 24 hours.
- For treating dementia associated with Parkinson’s Disease, the recommended starting dose is the 4.6 mg dose, every 24 hours. The dose may only be increased to 9.5 mg after four (4) weeks if the dose is well-tolerated. The dose may be increased to 13.3 mg after an additional four (4) weeks.
If the dosage of the transdermal patch is interrupted for less than 3 days, restart treatment with the same or lower dosage of the patch. If the dosage of the transdermal patch is interrupted for more than 3 days, restart the treatment with the lowest dosage (4.6 mg).
- For patients with renal or hepatic impairment, dosage adjustment may not be required. Consult your doctor for more information about your dosage.
- For patients who weigh less than 50 kg, monitor toxicities and discuss dosage reduction. If toxicities develop with the transdermal patch, reduce the dosage to 4.6 mg, every 24 hours.
