WHAT IS ELIQUIS (APIXABAN)?

Eliquis generic alternative is Apixaban. It belongs to a class of medicines called anticoagulants. It is indicated to treat harmful blood clots from developing in the blood vessels, which can be fatal.

Eliquis tablets may help treat and prevent the formation of blood clots following a hip or knee replacement surgery. Also, it is prescribed in patients who have atrial fibrillation (AFib), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary embolism (PE).

When certain illnesses, trauma, or medications impair the blood flow, platelets start to clump together in the blood vessels. Platelets are tiny blood cells that activate clotting factors (Factor Xa), leading to blood clot formation.

When Eliquis (Apixaban) medication is taken correctly and absorbed into the bloodstream, it works by attaching to the activated Factor Xa and stops its activity. Blocking the activity of Factor Xa reduces thrombin production and its ability to form blood clots. Therefore, this medicine helps improve blood supply and prevents the incidence of heart attack or stroke.

ELIQUIS (APIXABAN) DIRECTIONS

The dosage and frequency of Apixaban differ from one person to another. It will depend on the severity of your health condition, medical problem, and tolerance to the regimen.

When using this anticoagulant medicine, make sure to read all prescription information and follow all the directions thoroughly. If you are unsure how to use these tablets, talk to your doctor or pharmacist for clarification.

Eliquis dosing is as follows:

  • The recommended dose to decrease the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation is 5 mg twice a day. However, 2.5 mg is given twice daily for patients with at least two of the following: adults aged 80 and above, body weight less than 60 kg, and serum creatinine more than 1.5 mg/dL.
  • The typical dose to prevent blood clots following hip or knee replacement surgery is 2.5 twice daily. This prescription should be used for 12 days for knee replacement surgery, whereas 35 days for hip replacement surgery.
  • The standard dose in treating DVT and PE is 10 mg two times a day for the first seven days and 5 mg subsequently.
  • The suggested dose to prevent the recurrence of DVT and PE is 2.5 mg twice daily after at least six months of treatment for DVT and PE.

The following are the directions for administering Apixaban:

  • Administer this medicine orally two times a day, with or without regard to food.
  • For patients who have difficulty swallowing the tablet whole, you may crush it and mix it with water, apple juice, or applesauce. Make sure to ingest the mixture immediately without chewing.
  • Patients with a nasogastric (NG) feeding tube can also receive a crushed tablet mixture.

Note that it is best to call your doctor for additional info about other ways of taking this medicine.

Informing your healthcare provider will aid in determining whether this medication is safe for you to take.

Inform your doctor if you are using medications that can increase your risk of bleeding:

  • Long-term use of NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen, naproxen)

This medicine is effective and safe to use among elderly patients. Compared to other blood thinners (Coumadin), Vitamin K and Eliquis do not have a known interaction.

This medication is not approved for treating or preventing blood clots in children. Make sure to consult your doctor for other alternatives. There are no direct food-drug interactions when taking this pill. However, the following are lifestyle changes to consider to maintain optimal health when taking blood thinners:
