WHAT IS CIPRO?
Cipro (Ciprofloxacin) is a prescription drug that helps treat various types of bacterial infections. It kills bacteria through obstruction of its DNA replication by inhibiting type II topoisomerase (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV. This medication is for bacterial infections only, and not for virus infections.
This medication is useful for the treatment of Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis (AECB).
Taking Cipro for pneumonia treatment is acknowledged, but is not the usual drug of the first choice.
Cipro Classification: Fluoroquinolone antibiotics
Cipro should be administered with caution as Fluoroquinolone antibiotics are known for causing serious side effects. This medication should only be prescribed if safer antibiotics are unable to treat the infection.
Cipro XL (extended-release) is a prescription drug to help treat Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs).
