WHAT IS BIAXIN?
Biaxin or Clarithromycin (a generic option for Biaxin) is a prescription medication that helps with the treatment of a variety of bacterial infections. It is known as a macrolide antibiotic that is commonly used with other medications to treat stomach ulcers due to Helicobacter pylori. Biaxin’s drug class is called macrolides, which works by blocking nascent peptide exit tunnels to interfere with bacterial protein synthesis.
BIAXIN PRECAUTIONS
Before taking Biaxin, contact a healthcare professional if you are allergic to the ingredients of this medication, or have any other allergies. Inform your healthcare provider further if you or a member of your family has suffered or is suffering from the following medical conditions:
- Diabetes
- Liver Disease
- Heart Disease
- Kidney Disease
- Myasthenia Gravis
- Long QT Syndrome
- Electrolyte Imbalance
- Coronary Artery Disease
- Yellowing Eyes/Skin (Jaundice)
Biaxin puts you at an increased risk of QT prolongation. This condition may lead to serious and (rare, but possibly fatal) irregular heartbeat and other symptoms. This risk may increase if you are suffering from certain medical conditions or are taking other medications that may cause QT prolongation. Consult your healthcare provider and inform them about all the medical conditions you have and all the other medications you take before administering Biaxin.
Potassium and magnesium deficiency may also lead to an increased risk of QT prolongation. The risk could also increase if you are taking certain medications, such as diuretics, or if you are suffering from medical conditions such as vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and sweating.
Before receiving any immunizations or vaccinations, inform your healthcare provider first as Biaxin may interfere with live bacterial vaccines and cause them to not work well.
Geriatric patients are more sensitive to the side effects of this medication, such as hearing loss and QT prolongation.
Talking to your doctor or pharmacist is advised to discuss the risks and benefits of taking this medication while pregnant. This medication passes into breast milk and may cause harm to a nursing baby, so inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.
