What is Azilect?
Azilect (Rasagiline) is a prescription medication that helps with the treatment of symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, such as stiffness, tremor (shakiness), spasms, and poor muscle control. Azilect’s drug class is called dopaminergic antiparkinsonian agents, which work by slowing down the breakdown of dopamine in the brain to provide relief from motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
Azilect Precautions
Before using Azilect, contact a healthcare professional if you are allergic to the ingredients of this medication, or have any other allergies. Inform your healthcare provider further if you or a member of your family has suffered or is suffering from the following medical conditions:
- Heart Problems
- Liver Problems
- Kidney Problems
- Stroke
- Diabetes
- Hyperthyroidism
- Low Blood Pressure
- High Blood Pressure
- Sleep Disorders
- Mood or Mental Disorders
- Pheochromocytoma
- Severe or Frequent Headaches
Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires focus and alertness, as this medication causes you to experience dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid these activities until you are certain you can perform them safely. Avoid alcohol or cannabis (marijuana) intake to avoid worsening these side effects.
Before undergoing surgery, make sure the doctor is aware that you are taking Azilect.
Before undergoing a dental procedure, make sure the dentist is aware that you are taking Azilect.
Make sure to inform your healthcare provider about the other medications you are taking as they may change your treatment plan to avoid Azilect drug interactions with medications that should not be used together, such as cyclobenzaprine, dextromethorphan, meperidine, methadone, St. John’s wort, and/or tramadol.
To avoid raising your blood pressure to dangerous levels while taking Azilect, foods to avoid include those that are high in tyramine, such as aged cheese, herring, soy sauce, fava beans, pickled or processed meat and fish, and aged, dried, smoked, or fermented meat. Alcohol, such as red wine, tap beers vermouth, and ale should also be avoided.
This medication must only be administered at extreme necessity during pregnancy. Consulting your doctor or pharmacist is advised to discuss the risks and benefits of using this medication while pregnant.
It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk, so inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.
Azilect Side Effects
The common side effects of Azilect include dizziness, drowsiness, depressed mood, sleep problems, unusual dreams, involuntary muscle movements, joint pain, muscle pain, swelling in the hands, ankle, or feet, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, weight changes, heartburn, indigestion, constipation, and stomach or abdominal pain.
Stop using Azilect, report side effects, and seek medical attention if you start experiencing:

Some patients who have taken Azilect have experienced suddenly falling asleep while doing their usual daily activities, even falling asleep without feeling drowsy beforehand in some situations. This may occur anytime during your treatment with this medication. If you suddenly experience drowsiness or sleepiness during your usual daily activities, do not take part in dangerous activities.
A severe and serious condition called serotonin syndrome or toxicity may occur while taking this medication, especially when you are taking other medications that increase serotonin in your brain. Seek medical attention immediately if you start experiencing symptoms, such as irregular heartbeat, hallucinations, loss of coordination, twitching muscles, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, unexplained fever, unexplained agitation or restlessness.
Although rare, it is possible to suddenly experience an attack of extremely high blood pressure (hypertension) while taking this medication. Seek medical attention immediately if you start experiencing symptoms, such as severe headache, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, stiffness or soreness of the neck, severe nausea, vomiting, sweating or clammy skin, vision changes, widened pupils, and sudden sensitivity to light.

Azilect Dosing

Azilect comes in an oral tablet and has two dosage strengths, which are 0.5 mg and 1 mg.
- For the treatment of symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, the recommended dose for monotherapy is 1 mg, taken orally once daily. If you take Azilect with Levodopa, the recommended starting dose is 0.5 mg, taken orally once daily. The dosage may increase to 1 mg once daily, depending on the patient’s tolerance and condition.
The maximum dosage of this medication is 1 mg, taken orally once a day.
This medication must be stored in a clean, dry place at a temperature of 25°C (77°F).
